Please arrange your 10 primary source quotes and your 8 secondary source quotes into an outline of the body of your critical paper.
In other words, list the quotes in the order you will use them under each main body topic.

If you use a word document to do this, this could become the framework for your actual paper (because you could type your own writing in between the quotes after you've arranged them in order in this outline, thus creating a draft of your actual paper).

Please post (or link to) a word document containing the outline of your main body (everything but your intro and conclusion) here:

Please create a link to this first draft, calling it (YOURNAME)'S FIRST DRAFT, as a new wiki page.
Ask at least three of your classmates to read your draft (you might need to tell them where to find it by emailing them a link).
Students will be expected to read each other's drafts and leave comments in the discussion board.

Critical Paper

The story the Catcher in The Rye by J.D Salinger showed the trait phoniness through the main character Holden. Holden didn't like a lot of things especially people and things that were phony. Yet throughout the story Holden showed many traits about him that showed he was phony himself. He also was very judging about people that were phony even his own family but never judged himself. So in the story The Catcher in the Rye Holden the main character Holden accuses others of being phony but is phony himself because, he accuses others of being phony, he says things are phony but ends up doing them himself, lastly he makes everything he doesn’t like phony.

One of the ways that Holden is phony is that he accuses others of being phony. He does this by criticizing people and in other ways also. One example is when Holden accused his schoolmate Ackley that he was annoying and was just an annoying and phony person. Holden also accuses Ackley of being a disgusting person by saying on page 46 "He was so crumby in his personal habits”. Also he says on page 86 he calls the person he is talking to is strictly phony. Holden is very phony because he is a liar when he tells the boys mom on the train on page 54 that her son was the nicest and greatest kid that went to Pency then he says that he is the biggest bastard that ever went to Pency. He also doesn’t give people a chance. An example of this is when on page 108 of the book when Holden says “I can even get to hate somebody by just looking at them”. During the story Holden criticizes his friend and his date because he is insecure about himself so he says on page 127 "He was with some gorgeous blonde, and the two of them were trying to be very blasé and all, like as if he didn't even know anybody". Holden doesn’t like his teacher so he makes this statement “Even the couple of nice teachers on the faculty, they were phonies too”. In the Fallen Idol article by Peter J Sang it also specifies why Holden is phony. For example he says after Antoloni pats Holden on the head he is rendered a fallen idol. Holden says he wants to be a child and children are innocent and adults are phony but he says that he is an adult in a world of children. This shows that Holden calls others phony and criticizes them.

Another reason that Holden is phony is that he says that things are phony but ends up doing tem himself. One example is when Holden says They got a bang out of things, in a half assed way of course” when he gets happy and excited about things in the story. Also when Holden says that people like to talk a lot in this statement on page 126 " You never saw so many phonies in your life everybody smoking their ears off and talking their ears off about that play so everyone could hear how sharp they were". In the Fallen Idol this also backs up that Holden is a hypocrite in his actions. This is said on page 206 in this quote Holden hates lies, pretense, yet these ARE OFTEN HIS OWN SINS”. Lastly in the Fallen Idol it says that Holden is never to quick to blame himself in his mistakes. These statements show that Holden is phony and also a hypocrite.

Also in the Catcher in the Rye Holden shows phoniness by making everything he doesn’t like phony. In one statement Holden says “You could tell they all wanted to go to the movies I couldn't stand looking at them" this shows that Holden doesn’t like the situation he is in so he gets angry and calls it phony. In the Fallen Idol Holden is shown to portray everything he doesn’t like as phony. In this statement that is shown "Holden measures everything against his own absolute standards". It is also shown in this quote on page 206 "Antoloni is a shabby adult like all the others” he says this after saying that Antoloni is the best teacher ever only because of what Antoloni did to him. This statement all around sums up the beliefs of Holden "Holden refers to himself as pure and everything he dosen't belive in isn't also this statement :"Holden only see's manefastation in others".
